After leading the Merrimack College baseball team in most hitting categories over the weekend during his debut games with the Warriors, freshman first baseman Thomas Joyce (Newton, Mass.) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league offices Monday afternoon.
Joyce led Merrimack in batting average (.471), on-base percentage (.550) and slugging percentage (.941) as the Warriors went 2-3 over five games at the Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He tied for the team lead with two home runs and equaled the most extra-base hits on the squad with four.
In total, Joyce went 8-of-17 at the dish, tied for the most base knocks on the Navy and Gold. He struck a pair of doubles to go along with four singles. He scored seven runs, one off the most on the Warriors and ended the weekend on a four-game hitting streak.
The Newton native already is the first Merrimack freshman since Matt Brown ’16 in 2013 to record a multi-homer season, doing so in the first five games of the year. He emerged from the opening weekend for the majority of NE10 programs tied for the conference lead in homers, while ranking third in batting average and RBI (8).
Joyce and the rest of the Warriors return to action this week when Merrimack travels to Molloy College to face the Lions for a three-game series in Uniondale, N.Y. beginning with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday.--
