Merrimack takes home three weekly NE10 Baseball Awards
The Merrimack College baseball team received three Northeast-10 Conference awards when the NE10 unveiled its weekly report on Monday afternoon, headlined by a Player of the Week selection for senior outfielder Matt Nicholson.
Nicholson was Merrimack’s offensive leaders in the Warriors’ two games over the weekend at Limestone to begin the 2018 season. The Navy and Gold’s rightfielder hit two home runs – one in each game – and drove in four runs. Nicholson slashed .333/.333/1.000, totaling a team-best 1.333 OPS. The three-year starter now has 15 career long balls, the sixth-most in program history.
Senior PJ Browne earned his second-ever NE10 Pitcher of the Week selection and first since his sophomore season. The southpaw took the ball on Opening Night, tossing five innings of one-run ball in the Warriors’ first game of 2018. Browne finished the night with five strikeouts to emerge from the weekend leading the staff after totaling a team-best 58 punch-outs in 2017.
Freshman Vin Zappulla took home NE10 Rookie of the Week honors after earning his first-career collegiate victory in Merrimack’s 11-10 eight-inning triumph in the early morning hours on Saturday. Zappulla did not allow an earned run, striking out two Saints in 1.2 innings of work.
The Warriors will not play again until one week from Thursday, when the Navy and Gold begin the Northeast Challenge against LIU Post at 6 p.m. from Myrtle Beach, S.C.
