Atlantic Hockey moves its championship to Buffalo

Atlantic Hockey announced today it is moving its postseason championship site to Buffalo’s Harborcenter, beginning this season. The tournament has been in Rochester the last 12 years.

“We are grateful to the City of Rochester for being such gracious hosts over the last 12 years,” commissioner Robert DeGregorio said. “We want to thank the folks at the Blue Cross Arena for all they did to put on our championships each year, and we are excited to pursue this new opportunity in Buffalo.”

Attendance was solid in Rochester when RIT was a participant, but last year, the 11,000-seat Blue Cross Arena drew under 1,000 fans to the tournament, with the hometown team not present.

The deal is for one year and will be revisited after.

Canisius has been playing home games in Harborcenter since it was built. The location, across the street from where the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres play home games (where this year’s Frozen Four will be), also hosts the Sabres’ practice facility. Also in the Buffalo area is fellow Atlantic Hockey team Niagara.
