Ben Finkelstein leaves St. Lawrence amidst internal investigation

on

Ben Finkelstein, a first-pair defenseman, has decided to leave the St. Lawrence program. There is no definitive word on where he is playing next.

St. Lawrence’s hockey program is currently undergoing an internal investigation stemming from allegations that were sent to the university. The Saints are 4-14-4, though unbeaten in their last four games, including two wins at the Catamount Cup, and a recent win and tie vs. Canisius.

Finkelstein was a seventh-round draft pick of the NHL’s Florida Panthers in 2016. He has three goals and 12 points this season for the Saints, which leads defensemen on the team, in 20 games played.

“Ben is a skilled defenseman that played big minutes for us and we’re disappointed he has decided to leave the program,” head coach Mark Morris said. “We hope to continue to build on the momentum we’ve gained since the break with the guys that are here as we move forward into the second half of league play.”

The 5-foot-9 Finkelstein, a native of South Burlington, Vt., had five goals and 23 points for St. Lawrence as a freshman last season.

“I’d like to thank my teammates and coaches for their support the last year and a half,” Finkelstein said in a statement. “The memories and friendships I have made will last a lifetime. With that being said, at this point in my life I need to pursue other options. I wish nothing but the best for the program and will forever be grateful for the opportunities I was given during my time at St. Lawrence.”
