The No. 10 Merrimack College field hockey team continues to open its 2015 season on the road, heading to Assumption for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Greyhounds.
Date/Time: Sept. 12, 2015 | 1 p.m.
Records: Merrimack 0-1 | Assumption 1-1
Location: Multi-Sport Stadium | Worcester, Mass.
Last Time Out:
The Warriors opened their season on Wednesday night at Bentley, falling to the Falcons 1-0 in a very close contest. Despite the loss, Merrimack dominated the game offensively. The Warriors outshot the Falcons by a margin of 17-4, and also outnumbered Bentley in penalty corners 16-2.
Bentley scored its lone goal just two minutes into the game, but would produce very little offense for the remainder of the match thanks to some stout defense by the Warriors. In the second half, Merrimack held Bentley to just one shot. Besides the early score, the Warriors backline did not allow another shot on goal from the Falcons for the entire game.
Last Season vs. Assumption:
These two teams faced off twice during the 2014 season, with Assumption coming away with wins in both games. In their first matchup at Martone-Mejail Field, the Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead early in the second half. The Warriors would battle back to make it 3-2, but that is the score the game would finish at.
In their second meeting at Assumption, Merrimack entered halftime with a 2-1 lead. The Greyhounds, however, would go on to score three goals in the second half and proceed to win the game, 4-2. Assumption outshot the Warriors in that matchup 29-6.
- Merrimack had two different players outshoot the entire Bentley team in their first game in sophomore Taylor Simpson (York, Maine) and freshman Mary McNeil (Canton, Mass.), who showed strong offensive prowess in her debut as a Warrior
- Head coach Anne Rounce on her team’s first game, “We had some great opportunities that we need to capitalize on. We were able to find our rhythm in the second half.” Merrimack looks to bring that rhythm into Saturday’s match.
- Assumption is 1-1 to start the 2015 season. Like the Warriors, their loss came in their season opening game to Bentley, falling 2-1. They followed that game with a 5-1 win over Mercy this past Sunday
- Senior forward Kiley Colucci leads Assumption in points (4) and goals (2), with one of her scores being the lone goal in their loss to Bentley
