Merrimack Field Hockey Ranked Ninth in NFHCA Preseason Poll

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College field hockey program was ranked ninth on Tuesday in the unveiling of the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Preseason Coaches Poll.

Merrimack received 42 points overall to rank ninth in the poll. Defending national champion Shippensburg (218) totaled 14 of a possible 23 first-place votes to claim the top spot. East Stroudsburg – Merrimack’s first opponent of the 2017 season – ranked second to create a top-10 matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Five squads from the Northeast-10 Conference earned spots in the poll, led by the preseason favorites in the conference, Saint Anselm (142). LIU Post and Stonehill slotted right behind the Hawks in a tie for fifth with 139 points. Merrimack finished just above Adelphi (30) to represent the final two spots in the rankings.

The Navy and Gold’s matchup with East Stroudsburg is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania. The Warriors will look to avenge last season’s loss to East Stroudsburg, which occurred at Martone-Mejail Field in the 2016 season opener.
