The Merrimack College field hockey program was selected to finish in fourth place during the upcoming 2018 season as the Northeast-10 Conference unveiled its 2018 Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Monday morning.
The Warriors received one first-place tally, and were one of four teams to earn at least a single vote for first place. Merrimack made a return trip to the postseason last year under first-year coach Megan Shea, winning 11 games and qualifying for the NE10 Championship in the process.
Stonehill College (156) narrowly edged out Saint Anselm (154) to take the top spot in the annual poll. Both programs received five first-place votes, but Skyhawks took top billing by a two-point margin. The reigning conference champions, LIU Post, earned the remaining three first-place nods and totaled 149 points overall to finish in third. Stonehill, Saint Anselm and LIU Post all reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
Pace University (123), Assumption (110) and Southern New Hampshire (94) ranked in spots No. 5-7, respectively, to round out the top half of the poll. Adelphi (89), Bentley (70) and Franklin Pierce (68) represented the remainder of the top ten while Saint Michael’s (55), American International (35) and Southern Connecticut (26) and New Haven (17) detailed the final four positions.
The Warriors opened preseason action on Monday afternoon, while the 2018 season opener lies in wait, on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Seton Hill at 1 p.m. from Merrimack Stadium.
