Two years ago this month, Merrimack College senior Dillon Salva was posting up and boxing out, crashing the boards for Brookdale Community College’s basketball team.
Now he’s doing push-ups and running outs, aiming to climb onto the draft boards of NFL teams.
The Bishop Ahr High School graduate hopes to be the latest hoops-to-gridiron success story at tight end, following in the footsteps of legends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates.
“The NFL has turned into more of a passing league, and you’ve got these big, decently fast, athletic dudes,” said Salva, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 250 pounds. “Most tight ends are good jumpers, and they played basketball as either a small forward or power forward. Going up for a pass, it’s like going up for a rebound.”
