ABA Provides Update on Bert Hammel’s Health

Former Merrimack basketball coach Bert Hammel was hospitalized last month and underwent heart surgery at Mass. General Hospital in Boston. This past weekend, his ABA Basketball Camp updated his status, writing in an email that Coach Hammel has been moved to Spaulding Rehab in Cambridge as he continues his recovery.

“On behalf of the Hammel family, thank you for your thoughts and prayers over the last few weeks for Bert Hammel. Coach Hammel is doing well and is in the progressing towards a strong recovery – truly a miracle recovery,” the email read.

“He has been overwhelmed with the thoughtfulness and love that has been sent his way,” Hammel’s wife, Jill, said in the email. “He is progressing and has amazed many of the staff at Mass General and we know it was because of the miracle created by people’s positive thoughts and prayers.

“One of the doctor’s told him that this is a marathon and he is ready for the start. With so many people cheering him on, his motivation is stronger.”

The ABA noted that you can send Coach Hammel well wishes through email at berthammel31@yahoo.com.

This is obviously great news! We wish Coach Hammel the best as he continues his recovery.
