Former Merrimack men’s basketball coach, Bert Hammel, has returned to his Methuen home after suffering a health scare last month that resulted in heart surgery at Mass General Hospital and a long hospital stay, as well as a stop at Spaulding Rehab in Boston.

According to The Eagle Tribune, Hammel returned home this past weekend.

Hammel, who spent about a month in the hospital and rehab combined, is one of the most successful coaches in New England history (526 wins in 36 years, all at Merrimack) but is probably more well known for his work with children in the community through the famed ABA Camp.

He can be reached through e-mail at

Bridgton Academy basketball coach Whit Lesure (@WhitLesure) tweeted a picture of himself visiting Hammel on Monday.
