HARTFORD, Conn. — The Merrimack men’s basketball team opens the season tonight at the XL Center in Hartford. The Huskies are 0-1 on the preseason, falling to Providence last week at Mohegan Sun Arena.
— Five Merrimack freshmen could make their debuts tonight. Kahlief Crawford is a 6-1 guard from Linden, N.J. Trevor Lynch is a 6-2 guard from Cathedral High School in Boston and Devin Johnson is a 6-5 guard from Manasquan in New Jersey, and he can also play forward.
Along with Johnson up front, the Warriors are also adding 6-9 center Michael Mahoney from Braintree, Mass. and 6-4 forward David Giulani, who played his high school basketball in the Philadelphia area. Mahoney is the biggest player on the roster.
— Merrimack finished 19-12 last season, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament. UConn finished last season 16-17, with a 9-9 record in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies advanced to the AAC semifinals, losing to Cincinnati.
