Following another sensational outing in the biggest game of his young career, freshman attack Charlie Bertrand (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team has earned his third Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week honor in four tries, as announced by the league on Monday.
Bertrand lays claim to his third such honor this season after earning the first two top weekly rookie awards back in February; his most recent recognition comes after he led the Warriors with a career-high six goals against top-ranked Le Moyne on Saturday, accounting for yet another eye-popping afternoon by the rookie.
The Baldwinsville, New York, native continues to impress through the first four games of his collegiate career and came through with his best performance yet on Saturday, leading the Warriors with those aforementioned six goals. He was Merrimack’s only multi-goal scorer on the afternoon against the top-ranked defense in the country, and his last goal came with just over a minute to play to send the game to overtime. He also gathered a season-best three ground balls while firing a game-high 10 shots.
Through four games, Bertrand has already surpassed the 20-point barrier with hat tricks in all four of those previous outings. He holds a 10-point margin over the next-closest player for the overall scoring lead (16g, 6a, 22pts) and shares the team lead with two man-up goals, as well.
Bertrand and the rest of the Warriors return to action this coming Saturday (March 25) when they host eighth-ranked Pace. First whistle is set for 1 p.m. from Martone-Mejail
