Senior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) took down three Division I pairings en route to their Consolation Doubles crown over the weekend at the UConn Invitational, highlighting the opening weekend of the fall season for the Merrimack College men’s tennis program.
The duo opened the consolation draw with a 6-3 defeat of Boston University, which sent them to the quarterfinals to face teammates Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) and Thomas O’Brien(Lancaster, Pa.). Majewski/Belov dispatched their fellow Warriors in seven games (6-1) to advance to the semifinals.
Facing off against a combination from Bryant, they replicated their showing against the Terriers with a 6-3 defeat of the Bulldogs. The host Huskies had a pairing emerge from the bottom-half of the draw to meet the Navy and Gold in the final. The Warriors only needed eight games (6-2) to triumph over Connecticut and win the crown.
During singles play, Belov and Vega landed in the A Singles draw, bowing out in the first round. The junior classmates each won their quarterfinal match in the Consolation bracket, however, to reach the semifinals. Both victories came over opponents from Bentley.
Majewski and sophomore Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) represented the Warriors in the B Singles Draw, while O’Brien and freshman Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.)competed in C Singles. The B Doubles Draw included the pairing of Slobin and Fedorov, as well.
The Warriors return to action in two weeks when they compete in the ITA East Regional Championship beginning on Friday, Sept. 30, at New York Institute of Technology.--
