Joe Cannata recalled by Colorado Avalanche for NHL Global Series

The Colorado Avalanche are headed to Stockholm for the NHL Global Series, and the league has allowed the teams to bring a third goaltender in case of an emergency. On Thursday, the Avs recalled former Merrimack goaltender Joe Cannata to the NHL roster, and he’ll make the trip to Sweden with the team this weekend.

The Avalanche will play back-to-back games with the Ottawa Senators.

“It’s pretty cool,” Cannata said at practice earlier this week. “I was with San Antonio and they told me I was going so it was obviously a surprise. It’s going to be an experience of a lifetime.”

Cannata has appeared in three games for the Colorado Eagles (ECHL) this season, posting a .937 save percentage and a 2.01 goals-against average.

“I’ve been to Finland before and I’m sure they’re somewhat similar, but Stockholm is definitely beautiful,” he said. “It’s pretty cool how big hockey is here and just to experience another culture is great.”
