Merrimack freshman defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic has been named the 2017 TMR Rookie of the Year for Merrimack men’s hockey, as voted on by readers of The Mack Report.

Kovacevic appeared in 36 of Merrimack’s 37 games as a rookie, only missing the first game of the season, finishing with three goals and 16 assists for 19 points. Kovacevic’s point total led all defensemen and he was a fixture on both the power play and penalty kill.

A native of Grimsby, Ontario, the 6-foot-4 defenseman is eligible for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Last season, Drew Vogler took home the TMR Rookie of the Year Award. Kovacevic becomes the first defenseman to ever win TMR Rookie of the Year. The Mack Report has been running the awards for 11 years, since its inception in 2006.
