Mark Dennehy Named to Team USA Staff for U-17 Five Nations Tournament
Merrimack College men’s ice hockey head coach Mark Dennehy will be part of the coaching staff for the 2017 United States Under-17 Select Team, which finalized its roster for the upcoming Five Nations Tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic in August.
Dennehy recently completed a week-long stint at the Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp at the Northtown Center in Amherst, New York, with its annual all-star game and Five Nations Tournament roster selection. Dennehy will coach alongside Pat Ferschweiler, who is part of the coaching staff for the Detroit Red Wings, as well as with Shane Connelly (Wisconsin) and Joe Bonnett (USA Hockey/Colorado College).
The roster for the Under-17 Select Team was announced on Thursday, featuring 20 players that will compete Aug. 23-27 at the Five Nations Tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Team USA will be competing alongside the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland. Entering the 2017 competition, the U.S. has captured first place at the event in five of the previous six years. Team USA won the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament last year in Frisco, Texas, posting a perfect 4-0 record. It marked the seventh championship in nine tries for the U.S., which also claimed top honors in 2015, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2008.
Dennehy, who is entering his 13th season leading the Warriors in 2017-18, recently saw his team lead Hockey East with 21 selections on the All-Academic Team – including a league-most three Top Scholar-Athletes – and also saw returning sophomore Johnathan Kovacevic selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
