Just a few days before Merrimack beat Boston University last Tuesday, the Warriors’ head coach, Mark Dennehy, spoke about his team still having a lot of “firsts” they wanted to accomplish on their to-do list.
Last week was a big one.
Merrimack beat a BU team that was then ranked No. 3 in the Pairwise, 3-1, on Tuesday night and then last Friday beat the Terriers on the road at Agganis Arena, 4-1, earning their first ever sweep of BU and our nod as CHN’s Team of the Week.
“I thought that we have been playing well for some time and not getting rewarded,” Dennehy said. “One of the best games we’ve played all year was Tuesday against BU. We didn’t give them much. There was a little back and forth until their first goal, and then they hit the crossbar on a dump in. After that, I thought we dominated. We won battles, we won puck races, we possessed it down low and we were boxing out. It was a very good 60 minutes of hockey.
“On Friday, we played well enough to win. I thought we deserved to win that game, but we didn’t play as well as we played on Tuesday But when your power play scores two goals and your penalty kill does a good job you’re going to win hockey games.”
