Merrimack Picked to Finish Seventh in HEWBA Poll

Merrimack was picked to finish 7th by the HEWBA …

The Merrimack men’s hockey team was picked to finish seventh in Hockey East this season by the Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association, which announced the results of its annual poll on Sunday. The annual Hockey East Coaches Poll will be announced at the league’s media day on Tuesday at TD Garden.

Below is the full release:

Boston University was selected by the Hockey East media to capture the conference regular season crown in 2017-18 in the eighth annual poll of the Hockey East Writers & Broadcasters Association.

The Terriers, who tied for first a year ago, received just over half (13) of a possible 25 first-place votes. In a tight race, Providence finished second with five first-place votes, while Massachusetts-Lowell, the second of three teams that tied for first last season, was third in the balloting and also received five votes for first.

Northeastern received the other two first-place votes and came in fourth, while Boston College, the third defending regular season co-champion, was just behind in fifth place.

Vermont came in sixth, followed by Merrimack in seventh and Connecticut in eighth. New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine rounded out the poll.

Teams received 11 points for a first-place vote, 10 for second, and so on down to one point for an 11th place vote.

The media also selected a preseason All-Hockey East Team. At forward, seniors Brian Pinho (Providence) and Dylan Sikura (Northeastern) were joined by junior Adam Gaudette (Northeastern).

Because of a tie, three defensemen were chosen: Northeastern senior Garrett Cockerill, Boston University sophomore Dante Fabbro and Boston College junior Casey Fitzgerald.

Boston University sophomore Jake Oettinger was the overwhelming selection of the media in goal.

Northeastern led the media’s preseason team with three players selected, while Boston University had two players named and Boston College and Providence had one each. Three seniors were named, along with two juniors and two sophomores.

Ballots were received from print and broadcast media covering the 11 league schools as well as regional and national media.

The official Hockey East preseason coaches’ poll will be released on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the league’s annual preseason luncheon in Boston.
