UMass’ Wellman Inks Deal With Minnesota

Multiple media outlets, including College Hockey News, are reporting that UMass sophomore forward Casey Wellman is flying to Minnesota today to sign an entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild and could be in the lineup tonight, when the Wild host the Edmonton Oilers.

CHN is reporting that Wellman’s deal is a maximum entry-level deal with maximum performance bonuses as well.

Wellman finished with a 23g-22a–45pts line this season in 36 games for the Minutemen. He finished with 78 points in two seasons with UMass.

Wellman’s signing comes just a day after Hockey East’s first early exit, when Jake Newton signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks after his freshman season at Northeastern.

There are rumblings that another UMass forward – James Marcou – could be the next talent poached from Hockey East, possibly as soon as this week.
