VIP Insider (11/7): New recruit, soccer travels?

— There’s a lot of good reports coming in on newest Merrimack recruit Zach Uens. Most people I’ve spoken to who have seen him play agree that he’s a smooth skater with some really good puck skills. He’s playing in the OJHL as a rookie, as a 16 year old, which is a good sign. He’s also playing well, and getting quality minutes. It sounds like there were several Hockey East and ECAC schools on Uens, so this is a good get for Merrimack. Neutral Zone has Uens rated as ***3/4 out of five.

— I’m not going to profess to know much about how the NCAA seeds the Division II soccer tournament, but Merrimack travels and Adelphi gets to host this weekend in the East Regional? Really?

Let’s break it down for a minute …

Merrimack beat Adelphi in the regular season (the only meeting between the two teams). Adelphi lost to the 8th seed, Bentley, in the NE10 semifinals and Merrimack won the NE10 tournament. Both teams had two losses and Merrimack had more wins.

So explain to me how Adelphi is the No. 2 seed, hosting a portion of the region and also receiving a bye, and Merrimack is the No. 3 seed and has to travel to Adelphi?

It doesn’t make any sense. But, this is what you get when a “committee” seeds the tournament instead of a mathematical formula. That’s why, when people complain about the Pairwise in hockey, I groan. I’d much rather have an objective mathematical formula figure out the tournament than a mysterious committee.

If someone knows better, and I’m clearly incorrect, go ahead and email me and I’ll gladly publish a response. I can’t wrap my head around that seeding decision. It doesn’t make any sense.
