VIP Insider 135: What does Coach Q’s firing mean for Delia?

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— If you missed the news, the Chicago Blackhawks fired head coach Joel Quenneville earlier today. Why?! Well, it’s probably Stan Bowman’s last-ditch effort to pass the blame onto someone else. The Blackhawks are struggling, but it’s not the coaching. It’s poor roster construction. That’s on the GM, not on the head coach.

What does this mean for Collin Delia? Well, we’ll see. All indications are that Quenneville was a fan of Delia, and in every interview, he was almost complimentary of the former Merrimack goaltender.

But the Blackhawks promoted Jeremy Colliton on Tuesday. He’s only 33 years old, and he was the head coach of Chicago’s AHL affiliate in Rockford. He was Delia’s head coach in the AHL. Delia has impressed everyone in the organization, and no one recognizes that more than Colliton.

Cam Ward is struggling … OK, that’s putting it nicely. He stinks. In 8 games as Corey Crawford’s backup (he started for Crawford to begin the year when he was out injured), Ward has a 3.93 GAA and an .887 save percentage. Excuse me while I go puke. That’s horrific.

Anton Forsberg has been playing as well as Delia in the AHL, and he has more NHL experience, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn soon that Delia gets another look to backup Crawford. Especially if Chicago finds a way to dump Ward’s contract (he’s on a one-year deal).

— There was some word that Derek Petti’s injury could be more long-term …maybe week-to-week. Hopefully, he’s back sooner rather than later. He powered through on Friday night, when it was thought he might be out for the weekend, and then couldn’t get through the game on Saturday. We’ll know more tomorrow, but hopefully he’s able to heal up quickly.
