VIP Insider Post #101: Notes on Where Recruits are Headed in 2018-19

on

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— Merrimack incoming freshman August Von Ungern-Sternberg has an injury that will require surgery, according to sources. He could miss the first half of his freshman season but there is a hope he will be available for the second half. It sounds like a similar situation to Simon Loof this past season, where Loof was out of action until around Christmas.

— We’re beginning to learn where some Merrimack recruits will suit up in 2018-19. Defenseman Evan McIntyre, who committed not long after Scott Borek became the head coach of the program, is leaving Ontario and will play for Surrey in the BCHL next season. He’ll be joined by Kevin Wall, who is leaving the NE Prep ranks and will play for Chilliwack in the BCHL. Goaltender Joe Corcoran was also playing prep hockey last season and will play for the Maryland Black Bears in the NAHL this upcoming season.

— There’s a report that BC assistant Greg Brown is headed to the New York Rangers with David Quinn. I haven’t been able to confirm that report as of this writing. One source believes this could be Brown’s attempt to leverage BC for a raise. Many believe Brown is the heir apparent to Jerry York’s job at BC.

— UMass Lowell associate head coach Cam Ellsworth will likely be the new head coach at D-III Norwich. Ellsworth was a candidate at Merrimack — he wasn’t a finalist — and was he was offered the Alaska Anchorage job before turning it down.

— Merrimack associate head coach Curtis Carr pulled himself out of the running for the open assistant job at Harvard, sources tell TMR. Carr was a finalist for the job, but needed to step back when the process became longer than expected and Merrimack needed to prepare for the upcoming season. New director of hockey operations, Jim Tortorella, is still considered a strong candidate at Harvard.
