Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— Jim Tortorella to Harvard isn’t officially done yet, but they’re moving in that direction and I’m expecting him to take the job. I don’t think this is going to surprise many people at Merrimack, even this late in the offseason. It was pretty well established that Tortorella wanted to be back on a Division I staff as an assistant coach, and this is his opportunity. I don’t think anyone is blaming him for jumping at the chance.

As for who Merrimack might target to replace Tortorella, I think Scott Borek could look for someone of a similar mold. Tortorella brought a lot of experience to the hockey ops position, and one Merrimack staffer described him as a “game-changer” in that position with his experience as a head coach. I’m not sure of any specific names, but I think Merrimack will look to target someone with similar experience for the role.

— Cam Ellsworth will be named the head coach at Norwich University in Vermont. That leaves an opening on Norm Bazin’s staff at UMass Lowell. I had a few people ask me today what Bazin might do there, and I legitimately have no idea. Norm keeps things very close to the vest, and I’m sure there are a few names he already has in mind. Ellsworth has been close to leaving in the past — he was offered the Anchorage job this year and turned it down, and was reportedly a finalist at Niagara — so this isn’t something that’s going to blindside Bazin.

That being said, its also possible Lowell targets a current D-I assistant, which could keep the carousel moving.
