VIP Insider Post #84 (3/13)

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon will bring you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report.

— Merrimack’s opening might be one of the only head coach openings in the country this season. I started looking around at other situations today, and when you consider the teams doing well, who won’t make changes, and then the teams who have recently made changes and won’t have such short leashes on their new hires, there doesn’t appear to be many coaches on the hot seat.

— The one job that I think could open up is Brown. Brendan Whittet has posted single-digit win totals in each of the last four years. There’s also the potential for St. Lawrence to make a move, given the turmoil under Mark Morris this season and a subpar record.

I could see Brown making a strong run at Mark Dennehy if they had an opening. Dennehy’s players have always been among the best scholars in Hockey East, and on the ice, the Bears need improvement. If that job opens up, given that Dennehy is (relatively) local for the Providence-based program, I think you’ll hear his name come up. There’s also the possibility that Brown doesn’t make a move.

I have no idea if Dennehy would be interested, but Brown would almost certainly inquire.

— Another interesting news item floating around the rumor mill is that Boston College assistant Mike Ayers could end up on Mike Souza’s staff at UNH; Ayers is a former UNH goaltender. If Jerry York has an opening on his coaching staff, I could absolutely envision him going after Dennehy. That might not be a bad spot to land, either, considering York is 72 years old and Dennehy is a BC alum.

These are both “what if” scenarios, but they’re worth keeping an eye on. York, more than most coaches, always speaks with the utmost respect for Dennehy. Just this past Saturday, he praised Dennehy strongly for Merrimack’s efforts in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
