VIP Insider Post #89 (4/6)

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— Merrimack’s coaching search is getting down to the wire, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the college announced a hire next week. According to sources here at the Frozen Four this week in Minnesota, Scott Borek (Providence assistant coach) and Jerry Keefe (Northeastern assistant coach) were on campus this week for interviews; Paul Pearl, Havard’s associate head coach, was also on campus for an interview.

— Alaska-Anchorage is also getting down to the wire with its hire. According to sources, David Carle could be offered the job soon.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure why someone hasn’t hired Cam Ellsworth yet. Why programs around the country — especially programs like Merrimack and Alaska Anchorage — aren’t trying to copy UMass Lowell is interesting. Lowell doesn’t out-recruit you, they out-scheme you and out-coach you. That’s why they’ve been so successful. Ellsworth applied at Merrimack but I’m not sure he was brought on campus. Ellsworth is considered a finalist for the Anchorage job. Recruiters don’t always make great head coaches. Sometimes they do, but in a head coach you want someone who can scheme and be a leader. That’s Norm Bazin, and Ellsworth learned under his wing for a while now.

— There’s radio silence on St. Cloud State, which most people here at the Frozen Four find interesting. It’s possible they go with an assistant coach, or they could be trying to lobby a head coach somewhere else (likely in the midwest).
