— Asking around to some scouts and college coaches, it seems like Evan McIntyre is a big get for the Warriors. McIntyre committed to Merrimack yesterday and committed over two other Hockey East schools, which I’m told were Providence and UMass. That’s a nice win for the new coaching staff up against a top team like the Friars and a up-and-comer like UMass.

— Speaking of Providence, it was an interesting move by the Friars to promote Ron Rolston to full-time assistant. I’m not suggesting it’s a bad move — I think the opposite, in fact — but given his previous experience in the NHL I would have expected him to hold out for a head-coaching job. A few years back, I had heard through various sources that he was in the hunt for the Princeton head job and then he told me he wasn’t, because he was only interested in going after pro opportunities. I viewed the volunteer position with the Friars as a way for him to stay involved with a team while contemplating his next move.

Rolston, according to sources, was also in the hunt for the job at Merrimack, and met with the athletic department.

My guess is Rolston will try to quickly transition back into being a head coach, and with Providence expected to be good for the next several seasons (at least), he could try to use that success as a way to leverage into a head-coaching position.

—  Nothing new to report on the potential Ludvig Larsson transfer. I know Jeff Cox reported it as being a done deal, but it does sound like Merrimack is still open to Larsson returning, if he decides to do so. Regardless, that’s something that needs to get ironed out soon so teams can plan ahead.
