VIP Insider Post #97: Rumblings on BU

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— First, congratulations to Mark Dennehy on landing with the Wheeling Nailers. The Nailers are typically one of the strongest organizations in the ECHL, and have sent more players to the NHL than any other ECHL organization. I didn’t see the pro move coming for Dennehy until it was announced, but it makes a lot of sense, especially considering how closely the Penguins are aligned with the club.

— BU is eerily quiet on its head coaching front. I’m told from multiple sources that Shawn McEachern, who spent time with Northeastern and Lowell as an assistant and is now the head coach at The Rivers School has emerged as one of the top candidates. McEachern, of course, is a former Terrier and I’d be surprised if BU doesn’t bring in a former BU player as its next head coach.

Joe Sacco is interested in the job, I’m told, but there are also rumors beginning to swirl that David Quinn wants to talk to Sacco about coming on board his staff with the New York Rangers. Sacco is currently an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins’ other assistant (and BU guy) Jay Pandolfo hasn’t been mentioned in conversations I’ve had, but I think that’s more due to Pandolfo wanting to gear his coaching career more in the NHL.

Steve Greeley is interested in the job, some have mentioned and I’ve been able to confirm. It remains to be seen how serious he’s considering it, though. He just turned down the Carolina Hurricanes GM job and is on the path to one day being an NHL general manager (he’s currently the assistant GM with the Buffalo Sabres).

The more people I talk to, the less confident I am that Albie O’Connell will get the job, though I’d still give it a 10% chance of happening. It seems that BU has a lot of candidates with strong head-coaching backgrounds. That being said, whoever is hired, I wouldn’t be surprised to see O’Connell retained as an assistant on the staff.

Unless someone comes out of the blue, I’m expecting McEachern, Sacco, Greeley or Clark Donatelli to get the job. Those are the names that keep coming up the most frequently with sources I’ve spoken to over the last week.
