VIP Insider Post #99: Colton Bolts From UVM, Harvard Searching

Exclusively for our VIP supporters, TMR editor Mike McMahon brings you these “insider” posts, where he’ll discuss the news and give some insight and perspective on the stories we’re covering here at The Mack Report as well other insider info from stories around the country …

— Ross Colton’s departure from UVM is a big one for the Catamounts. Colton was a key player for them on the power play and also was a top-line forward. His overall point production might not be what you expect from other “elite” players in the league, but he also wasn’t playing with many “elite” players on a UVM team that struggled (at least until the stretch run), finishing 10th and losing 20 games. UVM has a lot of players on its roster, though. There are teams that sometimes go for quantity over quality in recruiting, and there’s a good number of players to pick and choose from at the school. That’s also why I think, in recent years especially, we’ve seen some interesting early departures. Just look at Brian Bowen, who had 27 points as a sophomore and then barely cracked the lineup as a junior before leaving the school and signing in the ECHL.

— Harvard is searching for Paul Pearl’s replacement under Ted Donato. There’s a lot of interest in the job, as you’d imagine, and Merrimack associate head coach Curtis Carr as well as Merrimack director of hockey operations, Jim Tortorella, are both in the mix, I’m told. Back when it looked like Pearl was the front-runner for the Merrimack head coaching job, I know Donato had begun to preliminarily search for his replacement, and word at the time was that he wanted someone who brought a lot of experience to the table. Ideally, Donato wanted a former head coach (like Pearl) to help him run the program. Back in April, there were some strong rumors that if Pearl came to Merrimack, Donato might look at Mark Dennehy to replace Pearl at Harvard. That’s off the table now, with Dennehy taking the job with Wheeling in the ECHL last month.
