Weekend Reax: BC has quietly turned its season around

on

Every week, TMR editor Mike McMahon takes VIP members on a trip around Hockey East and reacts to this past weekend …

  • I guess Boston College’s problems are all fixed. Very quietly, after starting the season in a tailspin, BC is 6-1-2 in its last nine games, which all started with a win over Merrimack on Nov. 3. This past weekend the Eagles swept UConn and outscored the Huskies 7-2. The streak as BC’s record back to .500 (6-6-2).
  • Another team that has quietly improved in recent weeks is UNH. The Wildcats looked like they were the worst team in Hockey East at the start of the season (at least offensively) but UNH enters the break 3-1-2 in their last six games. The biggest reason for the turnaround is Mike Robinson, who has a .925 save percentage.
  • On the other hand, BU split with UMass Lowell, which is fine for the Terriers, but that win is the only win for BU in its last five games. Unlike BC, BU is still three games under .500 (5-8-2) and will host Dartmouth on Friday before breaking for the semester. Jake Wise, who we mentioned in our Insider Blog today, has just two assists in 12 games and he has also only registered 18 shots on goal. First-round stud Shane Bowers only has eight points in 15 games.
  • UConn enters the semester break on a woeful seven-game losing streak and the Huskies are just 1-9 in their last 10 games.
  • UMass split was Quinnipiac was appropriate, given that both teams are likely top-10 or top-15 teams at the end of the season. Right now, I believe both teams are still playing slightly over their heads and will regress, but I’ve been saying that for weeks. It will happen for UMass once they get into the nitty-gritty of the Hockey East schedule.

Mike – Here’s a question. Did you agree with Borek pulling the goalie down 6-2 with 2 minutes or so to go vs. Northeastern Saturday night?
