Merrimack Drops Two Games at Long Island Invitational

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.  – The Merrimack College women’s volleyball program switched venues on Saturday, moving to the campus of LIU Post for the final two matches of the Long Island Invitational. The Warriors faced the host Pioneers and Jefferson University, losing both contests in straight sets.

Set Breakdown (LIU Post)

  • Set 1 – An early 5-0 run staked the Pioneers to an advantage, seeing their lead grow to as large as seven (16-9). Aces from senior Mary Kate McCarroll (Harrison, Ohio) started a 4-0 Merrimack run, but LIU contained the Warriors’ momentum there and held on to win the frame
  • Set 2 – LIU Post started the second game on a 9-2 run, but the Navy and Gold roared back to the tune of an 8-3 spurt to decrease their deficit to two, 12-10. LIU responded swiftly with a 7-2 stretch to take control and secure a 2-0 lead in the match
  • Set 3 – Another early-set run gave LIU control of the third, send the Pioneers to a three-set victory over the Warriors (25-12)

Set Breakdown (Jefferson)

  • Set 1 – Jefferson used a streak of 10 unanswered points to turn a 9-7 game into a 19-7 advantage, leading to its 25-10 opening-set win
  • Set 2 – The Rams won eight of the first 10 points to create a cushion in the second set. Sophomores Catherine Flaherty (North Andover, Mass.)and Sydney Buran (Cohoes, N.Y.) combined for a point to bring Merrimack within four, 17-13, but Jefferson led the remainder of the way to double its lead
  • Set 3 – The team’s traded points (6-5) early on, but the Rams seven of the next eight to create a seven-point gap at 13-6. The Rams proceeded to win by a 25-12 final, taking the match in three games

Notes and Notables

  • Buran took over as Merrimack’s setter in the final two sets against Jefferson, doing for the first time in her career
  • McCarroll’s 13 digs against the Rams broke her previous career high of 11 set last season

The Warriors compete in the Wildcat Invitational next weekend hosted at Wilmington University. Merrimack plays four matches in total, two on Friday and two more on Saturday.
