Following a career-high 28-point performance against No. 8/12 Bentley University last week, freshman Mayson Kimball(Webster, N.H.) of the Merrimack College women’s basketball program earned her first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week selection when the league announced its weekly awards on Monday.
Kimball shone for the Warriors against the nationally ranked Falcons, single handedly keeping the Navy and Gold in last week’s NE10 tilt. Fifteen of her game-high 28 points came in the third quarter as the first-year wing hit her fist five field-goal attempts to turn a double-digit halftime deficit into a single-digit game.
The Webster native finished the night 10-of-15 shooting overall, which including a season-best five three-pointers on seven attempts. Kimball set career highs in minutes played (37), points (27), field goals (10), field-goal attempts (15), three-pointers (5), three-point attempts (7) and blocks (3).
Kimball’s scoring average increased to 10.2 points per game through 10 contests, which ranks third on the Warriors. She also ranks second on the Warriors in field-goal percentage (.438) and three-point field-goal percentage (.361). Merrimack is now one of only four NE10 teams with three players averaging in double figures this season.
Merrimack has now captured five out of a possible six NE10 Rookie of the Week awards, with Kimball’s rookie classmate Alyssa Casey (Andover, Mass.)receiving four nods through the season’s first six weeks.
Kimball and the Warriors return to action tomorrow evening when the Warriors host the University of Bridgeport at 5:30 p.m. at Hammel Court.
