After leading the Northeast-10 Conference’s 15 women’s basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field programs in team grade-point average (GPA) over the academic year, the Merrimack College women’s basketball, women’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field teams have been named NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Award winners, as announced by the league Wednesday morning.
NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Awards honor the programs with the highest team GPA in each of the conference’s 24 sports throughout the academic year. All three teams had cumulative GPAs above 3.40, with women’s basketball leading the trio with a cumulative 3.548 GPA.
The recognition is the first such for the athletic department in two years; the women’s basketball team also was named an NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Award Winner for the 2013-14 academic year, as well.
It was a record year for the NE-10 with 75 percent of the league’s 292 teams achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. That was the highest percentage in conference history since the team awards were first given out in 2010, and it is an increase in two percent from a year ago. Additionally, 36 percent of NE-10 teams posted a GPA of 3.3 or higher (11-percent increase from 2014-15), while eight percent boasted team GPAs of 3.5 or higher.
Adelphi and Bentley had the most Team Academic Excellence Award winners with six apiece. Eight different league members had at least one winner. Le Moyne had four teams pick up accolades, while Merrimack had three and Southern New Hampshire had two. American International, New Haven and Pace each had one award winner.
