Freshman Alyssa Casey (Andover, Mass.) continued her heralded debut season with the Merrimack College women’s basketball program by receiving her fifth Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week honor on Tuesday afternoon.
Casey – who has won five of a possible seven NE10 Rookie of the Week awards – averaged 14.5 points per game in a pair of victories for the Warriors. Due to the holiday break for all NE10 programs, the award period included Merrimack’s game against Bridgeport on December 19 in addition to the Warriors’ win this past weekend against the College of Saint Rose.
Against the Purple Knights, Casey nearly recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and nine rebounds in Merrimack’s triumph over the Purple Knights. She then added 16 points on a career-high four three-pointers versus the Golden Knights. Fourteen of Casey’s 16 points came in the second half, with the rookie shooting 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes.
The Andover native currently ranks fifth in the NE10 in scoring average with 16.8 points per game and 15th in rebounds per game with a 7.1 average. Casey is now just one weekly nod away from tying the conference-leading six selections that Le Moyne sophomore McKayla Roberts earned last season. Prior to 2016-17, it had been six years since a NE10 rookie had received six or NE10 Rookie of the Week awards in a single year.
Casey and the Warriors return to action tomorrow evening when Merrimack hosts Southern Connecticut at 5:30 p.m. from Hammel Court.
