NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Following a double-double performance against Le Moyne as part of a 2-0 week for the Merrimack College women’s basketball team, freshman forward Denia Davis-Stewart (Dorchester, Mass.) picked up her second Northeast-10 Conference Spalding Rookie of the Week honor of the season, as announced by the league office Monday.
Davis-Stewart collected 13 points and 10 rebounds against the Dolphins as part of the Warriors’ wire-to-wire victory on Saturday afternoon. She got off to a hot start, scoring nine points in the first quarter alone, including a stretch that saw the forward score seven unanswered. She finished the day 5-of-8 shooting and made all of her free-throw attempts, doubling up for the second time of her debut campaign.
On the week, Davis-Stewart averaged 8.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Merrimack also defeated Southern Connecticut on Tuesday to extend its season-long winning streak to five games. Since Davis-Stewart entered the starting lineup against Holy Family on New Year’s Eve, the Navy and Gold have not lost a game.
Through 16 games, the Dorchester native is averaging 5.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. She leads the conference in both total rejections (41) and blocking average. Nationally, her 2.6 average ranks 13th while she is first in the country among freshmen. She has registered at least three blocks in 10 of her 16 games.
Davis-Stewart and the Warriors return to action on Wednesday evening when Merrimack travels to Saint Rose for a 5:30 p.m. tilt against the College of Saint Rose.
