After posting the best round of her young collegiate career last Monday, sophomore golferKrystal Knight (Groveland, Mass.) of the Merrimack College women’s golf team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Golfer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Knight’s results from Merrimack’s most recent tournament – the University of Indianapolis Invitational played last Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 12-13), were factored in this week’s league release/awards. Regardless of that timeline, Knight’s efforts in that tournament will surely stand out as one of the best by an individual in a single tournament/round so far this fall.
A reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Year and regional qualifier for the NCAA Championship following her tremendous freshman campaign, Knight set a new career-low with a score of 72 in the opening round of last week’s UIndy Invitational. She then followed that up with a strong second-round score of 77 to finish that tournament – which featured a loaded field – in a tie for 12th place with a two-day total of 149.
Knight is averaging a team-low 78.5 strokes per round through four rounds this fall, with scores of 70s recorded in three of those four rounds so far. She also logged a 77 in Merrimack’s first competition of the year back on Sept. 3 in a dual match against SNHU.
Knight and the rest of the Warriors will now gear up to defend their league title for a third straight season at next week’s 2016 NE-10 Championship. The two-day tournament will be hosted by Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, New Hampshire, beginning this Sunday (Sept. 25).--
