After following up a successful debut season with an even more memorable second year on the ice, the Merrimack College women’s ice hockey team also proved to be just as strong in the classroom, as the Warriors led Hockey East with 19 All-Academic Team selections – including a league-most six Top Scholar-Athletes – as unveiled by the conference office on Wednesday.
Senior Marie Delarbre (Fussen, Germany), sophomores Annie Boeckers (Otsego, Minn.), Meghan Martin (Newport, Vt.), Madison Morey (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Paige Sorensen (Plymouth, Minn.), as well as freshman Lea-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Quebec) all finished the year with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) in both the fall and spring semester, upping Merrimack’s program total to nine Top Scholar-Athletes in just two seasons as a varsity program.g
They were six of a league-high 19 selections, marking the first time in program history that Merrimack led the league in all-academic picks. Last year, the Warriors had 17 selections, the second-highest figure in the conference.
Delarbre, Boeckers, Martin, Morey and Sorensen joined senior Samantha Saulnier (Somerville, Mass.), junior Jillian Battista (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and sophomores Jessica Bonfe (Woodbury, Minn.), Dominique Kremer (West Fargo, N.D.), Katelyn Rae (Courtice, Ontario), Samantha Ridgewell (Outlook, Saskatchewan), Allison Sexton (Stonewall, Manitoba), Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.) and Emily Volpe (Whitby, Ontario) as two-time honorees.
Additionally, Demers and freshmen Chloe Cook (Summerland, British Columbia), Mikyla Grant-Mentis (Brampton, Ontario), and Andrea Olson (Stillwater, Minn.), as well as sophomore Jessica Kuhlman (Severna Park, Md.) all earned Hockey East All-Academic honors for the first time in their careers.
Overall across the league, 123 student-athletes have been named to the league’s 2016-17 All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing. A record 11 athletes from four different schools each earned the prestigious honor of being named Hockey East’s Top Scholar-Athlete, compiling a perfect 4.0 GPA for the season.--
