For the first time in program history, in just its second season of Division I competition, the Merrimack College women’s ice hockey team clinched its first-ever Hockey East Playoff berth on Sunday afternoon after Boston University defeated Maine. Merrimack will play at Boston College in the quarterfinals this weekend, beginning on Thursday.
The Warriors earned their first-ever playoff berth following a dramatic come-from-behind win in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Vermont. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Warriors would score three unanswered goals on their way to a 3-2 victory, which bumped them in the eight-seed one point ahead of Maine in the standings. With Maine’s loss at Boston University on Sunday afternoon, Merrimack officially clinched its first-ever playoff berth.
Merrimack will begin action in its first Hockey East Playoffs next weekend when they travel to top-seeded and sixth-ranked Boston College for a best-of-three series in the quarterfinals at Conte Forum. The Warriors will take on the Eagles on Thursday and Friday afternoon, with both games beginning at 2:00 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it will be played Sunday night with an 8:00 p.m. puck drop.--
