Following its upset of top-seeded Adelphi as the eighth seed in the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Championship that highlighted a strong finish to last season, the Merrimack College women’s soccer program was selected to finish in the same spot in the 2018 NE10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll that was unveiled on Thursday.
In a poll conducted by the league’s head coaches, the Warriors were predicted to make the conference tournament as the eighth and final seed. Merrimack won 10 contests a season ago, marking the 30th time in the last 32 seasons that the Warriors finished the season with double-digit victories
Adelphi – last year’s regular season champions – received six first-place votes and 185 points overall to earn the designation as preseason favorites. The 2017 tournament champions, Southern New Hampshire, received the same amount of first-place tallies, but five less points (180) to finish in second place.
Franklin Pierce (166), Saint Rose (158) and Assumption (141) each received one first-place vote each to account for the final three and round out the top five in the poll. Pace (130) and American International (104) ranked in sixth and seventh, respectively, to finish just ahead of Merrimack (103).
Stonehill (88), Le Moyne (82), Bentley (75), Southern Connecticut (55), Saint Anselm (48), New Haven (42) and Saint Michael’s (18) landed in spots No. 9-15, and will vie to improve on their preseason rankings when the 2018 season begins in three weeks.
The Warriors begin the year by hosting the Merrimack Kickoff Classic at Martone-Mejail Field on Thursday, Aug. 30, against Molloy College at 7 p.m.
