Merrimack Swimming Takes Part in Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women’s swimming team returned to action this past weekend when they competed in the Gompei Invitational hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute over the course of three days.

How It Happened

  • Freshman Andrea Taylor (Ludlow, Mass.) had a strong weekend across the two meets for the Warriors, posting two first-place finishes at Brandeis in the 100yd backstroke (1:04.55) and 200yd backstroke (2:20.85), while also notching a win in the 50yd backstroke at UNE (31.02). She would add a second-place finish in the 100yd backstroke at UNE (1:06.10) while helping two relay teams across the weekend nab second-place finishes.
  • Sophomore Samantha Towle (Chalfont, Pa.) was a key contributor to Merrimack’s cause over the weekend, registering two runner-up finishes at Brandeis in the 100yd free (56.54) and the 200yd free (2:04.14), then also notching a victory in the 100yd IM with a time of 1:08.19.
  • Rookiw Alison Canjura (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) continued on her strong freshman campaign, posting three top-three finishes at Brandeis to open the weekend, including a second-place finish in the 500yd free (5:43.09). She followed that up with two victories at UNE in the 500yd free (5:45.64) and 1000yd free (11:27.34) while contributing to Merrimack’s relay teams’ success during the weekend.
  • Two more rookies also posted some top finishes for the Warriors to put up points during the weekend. Freshman Caroline Ells (Centerville, Mass.) tallied three top-four finishes at Brandeis, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 50yd free (26.76), then added another runner-up finish in the 100yd free at UNE (1:00.55). Classmate Lucia Quesada Nylen (Malden, Mass.) posted two third-place finishes at Brandeis in the 100yd free (58.77) and butterfly (1:07.31), and followed that up with three runner-up finishes at UNE in the 200yd free (2:07.62), 50yd butterfly (29.75) and 100yd butterfly (1:07.05).

The Warriors are back in action next weekend when they travel to Bentley for a dual meet with the Falcons on Sunday.
