NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team was selected to finish in fourth place this spring as the Northeast Conference (NEC) announced its baseball preseason poll on Wednesday.
Bryant earned the top spot in the poll conducted by the league’s head coaches with six first-place votes, while Central Connecticut garnered the other two nods for first place to rank in second. Wagner College registered right above Merrimack in third, while the Warriors rounded out the top half of the poll. Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary’s, LIU and Fairleigh Dickinson ranked in spots No. 5-8, respectively.
Head coach Nick Barese begins his seventh season guiding the baseball program this spring, owning 134 wins over the previous six years. Barese’s Warriors impressed in their first taste of Division I action last spring, winning two games at Oral Roberts – the preseason favorites out of the Summit League – to start the spring season, and followed that up with a series victory over Michigan State.
Many impact players from last year return for Merrimack this spring including graduate student infielders Nick Shumski, Joey Porricelli and Thomas Joyce to go along with experienced arms such as graduate students Riley Sorenson and Daniel Amidon as well as seniors Vin Zappulla and Timmy Kalantzakos.
