NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior infielder Thomas Joyce of the Merrimack College baseball team was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American on Thursday, becoming the fifth Academic All-American in program history.
Joyce landed on the Academic All-America Third Team, boasting a 3.89 cumulative GPA as an economics major. The fourth-year Warriors earned All-American honors for the first time in his career from CoSIDA after three consecutive all-district selections that past three years. Merrimack’s first baseman was one of two Northeast Conference (NEC) representatives to be named All-Americans.
Beginning his senior season with an already decorated career, Joyce continued that trajectory in 2020 by starting all 15 games for Merrimack in its abbreviated debut Division I season. He hit primarily in middle of the team’s order, with half of his hits in 2020 going for extra bases. In his career, the Newton, Mass. Native hit .290 with 11 home runs and 88 RBI over 132 games played – 127 of which were starts. Joyce totaled 136 hits, scored 90 runs and added 26 stolen bases over his first four years. He was also a two-time Academic All-Conference selection when the program competed in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10).
Joyce joins David Miles ’93, Chris MacDonald ’96 (two-time Academic All-American), Joe Mantoni ’13 and Matthew Ronai ’18 as the program’s Academic All-Americans. He’s the 11th All-American overall for the Merrimack baseball team, as well.
Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.
