NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Seniors Thomas Joyce and Joey Porricelli of the Merrimack College baseball program were named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections on Wednesday, earned recognition for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.

Joyce earned his third consecutive all-district nod while Porricelli claimed the honor for the first time in his career. The former boasts a 3.89 GPA as an economics major while the later owns a 3.52 GPA in the mechanical engineering program.

Beginning his senior season with an already decorated career, Joyce continued that trajectory in 2020 by starting all 15 games for Merrimack in its abbreviated debut Division I season. He hit primarily in middle of the team’s order, with half of his hits in 2020 going for extra bases. In his career, the Newton, Mass. Native hit .290 with 11 home runs and 88 RBI over 132 games played – 127 of which were starts. Joyce totaled 136 hits, scored 90 runs and added 26 stolen bases over his first four years. He was also a two-time Academic All-Conference selection when the program competed in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10).

Porricelli put together a fabulous career at Merrimack entering 2020, coming off an All-American season as a junior. The third baseman was named NE10 Co-Player of the Year one year ago while adding three separate first team all-region honors to conclude the season. He set career highs in homers (9), triples (5), RBI (41), OPS, (.946), slugging percentage (.551), on-base percentage (.395) and stolen bases (33). In his career, the Monroe, Conn. had already established a new program record for runs scored (145), and eclipsed the 200-hit marker in 2020. He owned a career .317 batting average with 12 homers and 90 RBI to go along with 72 stolen bases. His 33 swipes as a junior was the third 30-steal campaign in school history. Porricelli joined Joyce with a pair of NE10 Academic All-Conference accolades, as well.

Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic AllAmerica® honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
