SOMERSET, NJ—Two Merrimack College Warriors programs have been recognized with sportsmanship awards by the Northeast Conference this week.
The Women’s Volleyball team was spotlighted as a Fall NEC Sportsmanship recipient, handling competition out of season in February and March gracefully. In the final match of the season, the Warriors took a set against Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
The baseball team was honored as a Spring NEC Sportsmanship winner after a stellar 13 conference wins out of the program’s 19 wins overall. The Warriors were a consistent presence in the conference’s weekly awards, with Riley Sorenson, Bryant Skurbe, Vin Zappulla and Jake Thibault all recognized throughout the season and Joey Porricelli represented Merrimack on the All-Conference Second Team.
The Sportsmanship award is determined by a peer vote in the conference. Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
