Commentary: Notre Dame Move Spins College Hockey’s Wheels Again

Well, that was an interesting pre-NCAA tournament bit of news.

Notre Dame is joining the Big Ten. In 2017-18.

OK.

This shouldn’t come as a major shock, really, but still does throw things for a loop. From a hockey standpoint, it makes complete sense. From a big picture Big Ten standpoint, it’s stranger, but if they want ’em, they got ’em.

The creation of the Big Ten over three years ago is what led to the most recent great college hockey schism. You all know the story by now — the “higher end” remaining CCHA and WCHA schools banded together to form a new league, the NCHC, and all the “leftovers” wound up banding together in the new-look WCHA.
