Ellis Scores Again as Field Hockey Drops Tilt at LIU


BROOKVILLE, N.Y.  – Junior forward Colleen Ellis scored for the third time in the last three games for the Merrimack College field hockey program on Friday, but the Warriors dropped a 4-1 decision to Long Island University at the Sharks’ Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The defeat dropped Merrimack to 1-3 in Northeast Conference play while LIU improved to 2-1

Rapid Recap 

  • Merrimack started the game with possession as the Warriors won consecutive corners in the first five minutes. The Sharks turned the tables however, scoring the first game of the game around the 10-minute mark. Graduate student goalkeeper Katharina Ohmen made three saves that preceded the goal 

  • Freshman Morgan Chase started Merrimack’s scoring play in the second quarter. She sent a pass around the LIU goalie to Ellis, who had an open net to shoot into tying the game at 1-1. Less than a minute later, LIU took the lead back, however, 2-1.  

  • Not much occurred in the third quarter as each team posted just one shot apiece. Similar to the first, Merrimack had a pair of corners early on in the period. In the fourth, the Sharks were able to expand on their lead, striking for two insurance tallies. Merrimack peppered LIU with shots in the period, forcing the Sharks’ goalie to make five saves 

Notes and Figures 

  • Ellis moved into the team lead for both goals (3) and saves (6) with her effort on Friday 

  • Chase recorded her first career colleigate assist on the play 

  • The team’s combined for 16 corners, nine for LIU and seven for Merrimack
