After battling the wind and rain and putting together two of the best performances of their careers, sophomore quarterback Cam Hayes and junior punter Grant LaButte have been named the Northeast-10 Conference’s Offensive Player and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
Both helped the Warriors stave off the brutal elements on Saturday as part of a 14-0 shutout victory against visiting American International on Homecoming Weekend. Hayes was a catalyst for the offense despite the conditions, setting up touchdown drives both in the air and on the ground during the first half. Meanwhile, LaButte’s heroics pinned the Yellow Jackets deep on a number of occasions throughout the afternoon and made life easier for the Merrimack defense, which put together its first shutout win in nearly a decade.
Battling heavy winds and rain throughout the day, what Hayes accomplished in Saturday’s win was remarkable. The sophomore completed 16-of-21 passes for 202 yards and had a say in both scores, a seven-yard keeper and a nine-yard pass. He also added 44 rushing yards rushing on a career-high 14 attempts to give the Warriors all they needed on offense to pick up their third straight win.
LaButte was also phenomenal for the Warriors when he was called upon in Saturday’s win against AIC. He pinned the Yellow Jackets deep with three punts inside the 20 and averaged 35 yards per punt, totaling 245 yards on seven kicks.
Both players earned their first career weekly NE10 accolades by virtue of their efforts in the victory on Saturday.
Next up for Hayes, LaButte and the rest of the Warriors is a trip to Pleasantville, New York, where they will meet Pace University this Saturday for a 12 p.m. kickoff at Pace Stadium.
