Merrimack graduate Artis Holt, who was a member of the Merrimack football team from 2009-13, died on Thursday night. Holt, 27, was the victim of a shooting in Baltimore County, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Holt was the heart and soul of the Merrimack program during his time in North Andover, starting 40 games on defense as a cornerback. Holt was a highly-decorated defender, including being named Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team Defense as a sophomore, junior and senior. Holt made 186 tackles and picked off eight passes.

According to the Sun:

“(Holt) was pronounced dead in the 8000 block of Liberty Road, police said Friday.

After being flagged down by a person in a parking lot, officers were directed to Holt who was lying down outside a carryout food business, police said. Holt appeared to have multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead by EMS, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed that the victim was shot multiple times after leaving the carryout restaurant around 11:56 p.m., but the suspect fled prior to police arriving.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Homicide detectives by calling 410-307-2020.”

The Merrimack football team released the following statement through Twitter on Friday:

“We lost a dear member of our family. Artis left a lasting impression on his teammates and coaches. Special would not begin to describe what type of person he was. Defined what it means to be a “Merrimack Guy.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the Holt family.”
