The Merrimack football team will play a road game at Lehigh on Sept. 28, the Mountain Hawks confirmed on Monday. Merrimack will replace Wagner.
This won’t be Merrimack’s opener (the official start of the season for more teams is the last Saturday in August), but it is the first Division I FCS opponent that has been confirmed for the 2019 schedule.
“The change was necessitated by the expansion of the Northeast Conference, to include the additions of LIU and Merrimack, who are both transitioning from Division II to Division I FCS,” the school wrote. “The NEC needed to adjust its league schedules to accommodate the new additions and the conference helped replace the home date against Wagner with the contest against Merrimack.”
Merrimack went 5-5 last season as a member of the Divison II Northeast 10 Conference. The September 28 contest will be the first-ever meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Warriors in football.
Lehigh plays its home games at the 16,000-seat Goodman Stadium.
