Bennett Will Remain at Union, Out of Running at UMass

According to several sources, Union head coach Rick Bennett was one of the top targets for Massachusetts athletic director Ryan Bamford as he searches for a new head coach. However, Bennett has elected to remain at Union, where he led the program to its first national championship in 2014.

“As far as the UMass position, obviously I am honroed and humbled to be considered in the mix,” Bennett said Friday morning. “But I think it was a lot of noise.”

Bennett was considered a top choice given the success of the Union program under his leadership, as well as local connections as a native of Springfield, Mass. He is also familiar with Hockey East, playing at Providence and serving as an assistant coach there from 2000-05.
