Hockey East Playoff Picture Heading Into Regular-Season Finales

Maine clinched the last home-ice spot in the Hockey East playoffs last night by beating Providence at Alfond Arena.

UNH and Northeastern are still alive for the last playoff spot. If UNH beats Boston College today and Northeastern loses to Boston University, the Wildcats are in and the Huskies are out.

If Northeastern wins, it’s in.

If Northeastern loses or ties, and UNH ties or wins, there are some confusing tiebreakers.

If the teams finish tied with 21 points (Northeastern loses to BU, UNH ties BC), then Northeastern would win the tie-breaker because the Huskies would have more league wins.

If the teams finish tied with 22 points (Northeastern tie and UNH win), then the Wildcats win the tiebreaker. That’s because the teams would have the same number of wins (10) and the

Wildcats would have a better record against the No. 1 seed in the playoffs – BC.
